There is some debate about using them with cast bullets, as you are essentially distorting the bullet while its passing through the carbide ring.

I was just confuse with Lee's instuction since they are talking about a taper crimp die but mention a crimp grove which is used in a roll crimp. The Lee claims to taper and then roll crimp, but it never taper crimps IMHO, as the ledge is to sharp. The Lee Factory Crimp die uses a collet type crimping , The differences are the case mouth is forced against the bullet & you can clearly see the indentations on the case mouth . On Revolver cartridges like the .45 Colt you will need to us a roll crimp. On rifle cases like the .223, if you are using in a bolt gun you can get by without crimping, if your going to use them in a semi-auto (AR) I would suggest using a taper crimp or Lee Factory Crimp die.

So a roll crimp won't work, you need a taper crimp. I don't now of any 9mm that would ever want or need a roll crimp so I'm thinking the dies you have should work. If nothing else you can set with that set and get a Hornady Factory Crimp die to crimp if you feel the need. I like the Factory Crimp Die anyhow. With using the Gaep finishing tool , I get a finished FOLD crimp as good as a factory load but most of the time , "Better" ! It's the spinning process of the tool , chucked-up in a Drill Press that heats the crimp , rounding the nose and compressing the payload and components down all at once , that gives the Better than factory look to the shell .

Lee Factory Crimp vs Redding Taper Crimp ? I have been using a Lee Factory crimp die for the last couple years but have just purchased a set of Redding Titanium Carbide Dies. Will still be doing the crimp as a separate step but what is your opinion of which is better or is this just a Ford/Chevy thing.

I have some more SMK 77's w/cannelure enroute. Question is, I haven't crimped in the past with these, haven't had issues. Does anyone use the Lee Factory Crimp Die? I just picked one up, mainly to have. Reading the Lee book, test state that the inconsistancies were less with a crimp vs. no crimp. Thoughts ? Mark
The Lee Factory Crimp Die does more than apply a taper "crimp". It also has a sizing insert. It's referred to as post sizing by some, meaning (potentially) sizing the completed round. It also applies a taper crimp.

The die merely removes the bell from the case mouth that was used to ease seating of the bullet and pushes the case mouth parallel to the bullet. Taper Crimp/Seating Die Taper Crimp/Seating Die. re: 45 acp crimp die problems May 21st, 2013 at 6:38am I spoke with Dillon yesterday and was asked how I cleaned the brass and I replied with a sonic cleaner then I tumbled in corn media with polish for 1 hr. he said this was problem that the sonic cleaner was getting them too clean and I should spray some lube on the cases.
